Opportunities to learn with LEGO

FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Discovery Coordinator – Lucy Owen, has written a short blog post about Lego League, which includes curriculum links and information about fully funded class packs….

Introducing fun into STEM with FIRST® LEGO® League!

FIRST® LEGO® League is a global STEM programme designed to develop STEM learning in children between 4-16 years of age in a fun, engaging and inspiring way. FIRST® LEGO® League is split into three programmes for different age-ranges:

  • FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Discovery, for 4-6 year olds.
  • FIRST® LEGO® League Jr., for 6-9 year olds.
  • FIRST® LEGO® League, for 9-16 year olds – find out more about this programme here.

FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Discovery

FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Discovery is a fun introductory STEM programme for teams of early learners.

It ignites children’s natural curiosity and stimulates playful learning as they work in small teams of four children in their classroom. Children develop key habits of learning throughout the programme – such as teamwork, problem-solving and perseverance – which better equip them to face future challenges – see one of the fun activities that develop these skills below:

A new challenge is presented every year and each team begins their exploration of this real-world theme by using the brilliant STEAM park and an exclusive LEGO® Education Discovery set to build a solution to the challenge with LEGO® DUPLO® elements. Teams share their learning journey, ideas, models and skills at a Celebration Event with their parents and carers.

FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Discovery is mapped to the EYFS and primary curriculums, with a progression of skills document showing that it is a long-term programme. There are free teacher resources and helpful videos available here.

The best part is that we have fully funded class packs available! This is the kit that’s included in a class pack. Please contact me on lucyowen@theiet.org for more information and to apply for a funded pack.

FIRST® LEGO® League Jr.

FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. is an exciting STEM programme for 6-9 year olds. Each year a theme relevant to the world around them is chosen as a focus for the children’s work – see this year’s theme here. Teams of up to six children research the topic, display their ideas on a ‘Show Me’ poster, build a LEGO® model and program one part to move using the brilliant LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0. Teams attend a regional Expo to showcase their learning and receive an exclusive LEGO® medal.

FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. rapidly develops teamwork, design, programming and communication skills (find our curriculum link and progression of skills documents here), but the most important thing is that it is great fun and makes children feel proud of what they have achieved!

We’ve also got fully funded team registrations available for FIRST® LEGO® League Jr.! Please contact demicornell@theiet.org for more information and to apply.
